Welcome to our Kiwi Crate Review where we will explore the ins and outs of the Kiwi Crate by KiwiCo! In a nutshell, it is a subscription box for kids with projects that focus on art, science and engineering activities. STEM projects and activities are a big deal these days! But what do real kids and parents think?

A little Christmas story (Don’t worry, it totally relates!)

My family and I had the opportunity to be at my brother’s house this past Christmas to spend time with him and his family. Christmas morning arrived and the much-anticipated gift opening was underway.

My 7 year old nephew opened up one particular gift he had received and got really excited… it was a KiwiCo box!

He was ready to run into the other room and start putting it together immediately. He is no stranger to these boxes and he was already anticipating the fun he would have doing the project!

All of the materials needed to do the projects come right in the box. Step-by-step instructions are included, where applicable.

Once you start the subscription, the box arrives every month with new activities.

It includes an element of surprise. You may know the theme of the next month, but you won’t know the actual project(s) until the box arrives!

How do I get one and what happens next?

First, you get to choose a box that fits the age and interests of the child who will be receiving it. After the box arrives, the real test begins! (The kid test, where you find out how they actually feel about it heehee!)

Pull the materials out and get to playing…I mean working;) Depending on the age of the child and how hard the activity is for them, they may sometimes need your help. (oh darn, an opportunity to spend time together;))

You can choose to sign up for a one-time box, a 3 month subscription, 6 month subscription, or 12 month subscription. One important thing to note: You can switch to another box or cancel your subscription at anytime.

Description and Features

The Kiwi Crate comes in a box filled with project materials, kid-friendly instructions, a magazine with comics, experiments, and games and online tutorials.

Who is the product for?

These projects are made with 5-8 year-olds in mind. Especially made for those kids who are curious, creative and enjoy hands-on activities.

Let’s be real, that describes just about every kid! You know your kids best, if you think your 4 year old could handle it, give it a shot!

What I like

They make learning fun! With activities arriving monthly and other activity ideas included, your kids will stay busy for hours. But not just busy to be busy, these activities will keep them busy learning. An added bonus is that the boxes come ready to go, you don’t have to think up project after project!

It is super convenient to get the box and have all of the materials included. Once you start the subscription, they’ll just keep coming!

If you are a parent, grandparent, aunt, or uncle looking for a fun gift that keeps on giving- send a subscription box! It takes all of the guess work out of coming up with something new to give for things like birthdays or Christmas.

What I Don’t Like

The projects can be breakable. As we well know, kids can be rough with things sometimes. Depending on the project material and personality of the child, they may not last as long. The cost can be a tough thing to pay month-to-month, so keeping an eye on your budget would be important. Also, some people don’t like not knowing which projects are coming each month.

Read the following review from an experienced mom!

Jodee’s mother (her children’s grandma) lives in another country and sends subscription boxes to stay connected and share something fun and engaging from a distance.

Jodee shares:

“I am a mother of 3 and when my Mom first suggested that she order a Kiwi Crate for my 8 year old I was excited.

At the time my children really loved doing crafts and I was having a hard time keeping up with them.

When we got our first box we were so excited. I couldn’t believe all the things that came in the box. The tools and the crafts supplies were top notch.

We have since been getting the crates for all 3 of our kids and I have never been disappointed with the quality of the materials and product.

One thing that I have been super impressed over the last 3 years of getting these crates is the unique and very in depth crafts. They have been so different but all so interesting.

Almost everything has some sort of STEM tie. Each crate comes with instruction books and also with books that give additional activities, stories and interesting facts about the craft that they focused on.

All the materials that are included are so easy to use and kid friendly. They are non toxic and always washable. The kits almost always include a mess mat or they instruct the kids to get one so they don’t make a mess. The instructions are so clear and precise.

All of my 3 kids have received the kiwi crate and each of them have opened the box and done the craft on their own.

I really have only good things to say about this company. This has been so great for my kids and I have very much enjoyed all the crafts that they are doing and all the learning that happens with the included materials.

I have only had good customer service when I have had to call in to talk to them about the subscriptions, but they are helpful and fair. We love them!”

Final Thoughts on our Kiwi Crate Review

There you have it! We’ve covered the ins and outs of the Kiwi Crate and had some fun along the way.

Kiwi Crate – Tinker, Create and Innovate

These crates are made for kids ages 5-8, but as we talked about, they may be applicable to other kiddos as well. It is something great to get for your own kids or as a gift to other kids in your life. Be warned, if you get a crate you will likely need to be prepared to see smiles and excitement;)

Overall, I think it IS worth it! Any child would have a great time learning and playing with these crates.

  1. This is a very informative site for parents to check out, it loaded with lots of educational materials for kids, i will recommend this site to parents, good job

  2. Hello Heidi, great article here. I’m an uncle and I haven’t seen my niece of 6 in over 3 months.

I was planning on visiting them this April but the virus has everyone on edge and in lockdown at the moment.

I think this will pass as a perfect gift for her when I get to see her again. I’ve always liked educative toys even as a child and I believe this will be a good choice.

Thank you for an awesome recommendation.

    • I completely understand. It is so hard having to keep our distance from everyone, especially family! This virus has created quite the mix-up in all of our lives. I hope your niece enjoys the box when she gets it, it would be awesome to hear about her experience. Thank you!

  3. Hi Heidi!

    Very nice post!

I love the idea of the kiwi box, it is fun and helps kids develop their abilities. With this pandemic time where, as parents have to keep our kids entertained and educated at the same time, having a kiwi box can sure help.

I hope they can take into consideration that kids are not always delicate with their toys, and think of making the materials more resistant. I will be subscribing for my nephews to enjoy, I hope I can unsubscribe anytime, right?

    • Hello!

Yes, I think it could be a particularly helpful thing to have during these crazy times we are seeing all around the world! Yep, you can unsubscribe at anytime:) Also, if your nephews ended up wanting to try a different box, you can easily switch as well. I’d love to hear what your nephews think about the Kiwi Crate!

      Thank you for your comments!

  4. My kids love subscription boxes, we have several different types including the KIWI Crate. They get so excited when these boxes show up, it is like a birthday or Christmas. Of course, they can be used for presents for those special occassions. The great thing about this one is that it provides an educational experience. Yes, it is breakable but these are not toys, they are fun educational opportunities.

    • Thank you so much for sharing! That is awesome your kids receive these boxes and have been excited about them. They can be so fun and like you said, a great educational opportunity. I hope they continue to have fun learning!

  5.
